We love Chiang Mai weather because, due to its location in the mountains of Northern Thailand, it is usually much cooler and more pleasant than Bangkok or the southern beaches and islands. This is not always true though, as in mid-Summer, Chiang Mai can get daytime temperatures in the mid-high 30s (C) or around 100 degrees F. But there’s always somewhere cool to escape the heat.

The best of Chiang Mai weather is from Christmas until around Easter (December to March) when the daytime temperatures average around 25-28 degrees (C) and overnight it can get down to 12-15 degrees (C). It’s usually pretty dry at this time of year, so it’s also the best time to get out and enjoy the attractions Chiang Mai has to offer (see Chiang Mai attractions for more details about these).

Heading into the summer season (March-June) the Chiang Mai weather not only gets much hotter, but also affected by a lot from smoke pollution caused by farmers burning off the stubble of their spring crops, both in Thailand and across the border in Laos, Cambodia and Burma. If you suffer from hay fever and other similar allergies, make sure you take precautions like a face mask and antihistamines with you.

The wet season in Chiang Mai falls between May and September each year, although the wettest months are definitely September and October when you can see heavy and persistent rain for days. But we find that even when it’s raining heavily in Chiang Mai it’s still usually warm enough to swim in the pool and wander around between showers. You really don’t mind getting wet. It’s a bit unfortunate that Chiang Mai’s rainy season happens to coincide with the peak holiday seasons in America and Europe, but don’t let that put you off. Even when raining, it’s still a great place to be.

Overall, we feel February is the best month of the year to visit Chiang Mai. It just always seems to have the perfect weather conditions. But any time between about November and April is also good as the weather is usually fine and warm, although it can get a bit chilly up in the mountains.
